FLUSHING — Tom Smallwood's pro bowling career reads something similar a Hollywood script: "Laid-off Full general Motors worker qualifies for pro bowling tour, wins championship tournament, launches pro bowling career."

Smallwood, a quondam Flushing resident and 13-year pro on the Professional Bowling Association (PBA) Tour, said that he's been impressed by the TV series and how it depicts the risky simply rewarding journey he took to pursue a bowling career.

Before he became a professional bowler, Smallwood worked on an automotive assembly line at a GM factory in Pontiac. But in December 2008, but two days before Christmas, he learned that he was existence laid off.

With a young family to back up and good-paying jobs hard to observe, Smallwood decided to parlay his bowling skills into a shot at the Professional Bowlers Qualifying Schoolhouse. At the time, Smallwood had congenital up an impressive resume every bit an amateur bowler, competing in weekend tournaments and Michigan majors to make money on the side.

Smallwood was one of only eight bowlers to make the cut at the qualifying school in a field of 120, which earned him exempt status on the PBA Tour in 2009.

As a tour rookie, Smallwood more than held his own and even qualified for the PBA World Championship in Wichita, KS, that December. There, he picked upward his starting time PBA Tour title win, defeating 2008–09 PBA Player of the Yr Wes Malott in the last match and earning $50,000 in prize coin.

"That win changed my life, and it gave me a career to support my family unit," Smallwood said. "I probably showed more than emotion that mean solar day than in any other tournament in my life."

Smallwood has won three PBA Tour titles, including his most recent victory at the Barbasol PBA Players Title in 2018.

Growing up in Flushing, Smallwood'due south main sport was baseball. Bowling was more of a hobby for him, and, in his words, he was "terrible at it."

Only Smallwood, 44, said that his competitive spirit kicked in and he worked hard to improve his craft on the lanes throughout his high schoolhouse years. As an adult, he also happened to run across his future wife Jen at a bowling alley when they were both playing in leagues.

Although Flushing High School didn't have a bowling squad when he attended, Smallwood was inducted into the FHS Sports Hall of Fame in 2020 in recognition of his pro bowling career. He graduated from FHS in 1996.

Smallwood, who'southward lived in Saginaw since 2004, said that he hopes his backstory as portrayed on "How We Roll" will be an inspiration for anyone who's looking to pursue a lifelong dream or change their circumstances with a longshot.

"I'k a firm believer that whoever dies with the least corporeality of regrets wins in life," he said. "I'm happy to say that I have very few regrets."
